HP provides free and convenient ways to recycle used Original HP Ink and Toner Cartridges. At about 13,300 authorized sites worldwide, home and commercial customers can return Original HP Ink and Toner Cartridges for free, and free pickup and mail back options are available in some locations. More than one billion HP print cartridges have been returned to the HP Planet Partners recycling program so far. More than 88% of our Original HP Ink Cartridges contain 5–75% postconsumer recycled content, and 100% of Original HP Toner Cartridges contain 1–79% postconsumer or postindustrial recycled content.

HP’s Recycling Process
1. Collection: Cartridges are collected and transported to HP recycling facility.
2. Sorting: Cartridges are sorted and components are separated.
3. Shredding: Cartridges are shredded or disassembled.
4. Separation: Materials are sorted into singular material streams and are used to create new cartridges.

Millions of ink and toner cartridges were being discarded annually, contributing to the growing problem of electronic waste. Determined to make a diff erence, HP embarked on a mission to transform its business model and lead the industry towards a more sustainable future.
The first step was the creation of the HP Planet Partners program in 1991. The program quickly gained momentum. HP set up collection points across the globe, making it easy for customers to return their used cartridges. The company also invested heavily in advanced recycling technologies, capable of breaking down the cartridges into their raw materials and reusing them in the production of new cartridges. This closed-loop process not only conserved resources but also significantly reduced the carbon footprint associated with manufacturing. By 2003, the company had already recycled 100 million cartridges, a remarkable achievement that underscored its commitment to sustainability. However, HP was just getting started. Th e company continued to innovate, developing more efficient recycling processes and expanding its collection network. One of the most significant milestones in HP’s journey came in 2016, when the company announced that it had recycled over 500 million cartridges. By 2023, HP had reached a monumental milestone: over 1 billion original HP ink and toner cartridges had been recycled. Th is staggering figure represented more than just numbers; it symbolized a collective eff ort to make a difference. Each recycled cartridge was a step towards a cleaner, more sustainable planet. Th e impact was multifaceted: it conserved millions of pounds of raw materials, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and diverted vast amounts of waste from landfills.
The success of HP’s recycling program also had a ripple effect across the industry. Competitors took notice, and many followed suit, implementing their own recycling initiatives. Th is collective eff ort amplified the impact, driving the entire industry towards more sustainable practices.
