A firmware update released by HP Jan. 29, 2026 disabled some remanufactured ink cartridges in multiple printer models, according to the International Imaging Technology Council (I-ITC), an industry group representing third-party printer supply companies.

In a statement, the organization said HP’s Firmware 2602A/B update affected 11 printer models and rendered certain remanufactured cartridges inoperable. The group said the update was issued through HP’s printer firmware system and impacted cartridges produced by remanufacturers rather than original HP supplies.
I-ITC said the update is related to HP’s printer security feature known as “Dynamic Security,” which is designed to authenticate cartridges installed in compatible printers. According to HP product documentation cited by the group, printers using Dynamic Security are designed to operate with cartridges containing HP-authorized chips.
The industry group also said the firmware update raises questions about compatibility with requirements under EPEAT 2.0, an environmental certification program for electronics products. The organization noted that HP participated in the development of the updated EPEAT criteria beginning in 2023.
According to I-ITC, HP has registered a number of computers and monitors under the updated EPEAT 2.0 criteria but has not registered printers under the new version of the program.
Printers from the company remain listed under the earlier EPEAT 1.0 standard, the group said.
The organization said remanufacturing used cartridges allows the original cartridge housing to be reused, which it says can reduce environmental impacts compared with producing new cartridges.
