“The printing industry today is not just about printers and cartridges; it’s an interconnected ecosystem where cloud computing, telecommunication networks, and smart devices redefine its operations. Someone in Delhi can seamlessly print documents stored on the cloud through a printer in Lucknow—this is the future of printing. Connectivity is key, and the synergy between telecom infrastructure, terminal devices like printers, and mobile-initiated workflows is driving a revolution. The ability to print remotely, on-demand, and across geographies reflects the transformation of printing from a standalone function to a truly integrated digital experience.”

“India’s IT and printing industries must address the critical challenge of manufacturing self-sufficiency. Currently, we remain heavily dependent on imports for essential components, particularly from China. If we truly aim to compete on a global scale, we must focus on building a component-level manufacturing ecosystem within India. Moreover, beyond domestic markets, we should explore export opportunities in neighboring regions such as Nepal and Southeast Asia. By strengthening local production capabilities and expanding our distribution networks internationally, India can establish itself as a key player in the global supply chain, reducing dependency and enhancing competitiveness.”

“Customer support and service accessibility are crucial in the Indian printing industry. Brother International has established over 260 service centers across India, ensuring prompt and efficient service in metros, rural areas, and even remote villages. Our goal is to provide seamless on-site and in-store support, enhancing user experience across all product categories. A robust after-sales infrastructure is key to maintaining product reliability, fostering customer trust, and driving business growth. As we expand our footprint, our commitment remains to offer top-tier technical support, ensuring every customer receives the best service, irrespective of their location.”

“India’s high-end printing segment is witnessing consistent growth, but distribution remains a challenge. To sustain the momentum, OEMs and distributors must work together to overcome logistics hurdles and ensure last-mile delivery. The industry needs an efficient supply chain with streamlined inventory management to meet the rising demand. Collaboration across stakeholders — manufacturers, distributors, and service providers — is critical in resolving these bottlenecks. A well-structured distribution network will not only enhance accessibility but also empower businesses and consumers alike, paving the way for a more connected and efficient printing ecosystem.”

“‘Make in India’ is a great vision, but transforming it into reality requires substantial infrastructure and investment. While the sentiment behind it is strong, its practical implementation remains a challenge. The IT and printing industries need large-scale manufacturing hubs, backed by strong policy support and financial incentives. At ProDot, we have been working towards setting up a mega factory for the last two years, but challenges such as supply chain constraints and raw material dependencies persist. True success lies in building a self-sufficient ecosystem where local manufacturers can thrive and compete globally.”

“India was once a leader in CRT and picture tube manufacturing, but policy missteps led to the industry’s decline. Today, with the government taking decisive steps to boost local production, the focus must shift to component-level manufacturing. While efforts have been made to strengthen end-product assembly, true self-reliance can only be achieved when we manufacture critical components domestically. The government’s intent is clear, but the strategy must move from a top-down approach to grassroots-level manufacturing, ensuring that India not only assembles but truly creates cutting-edge IT and printing products from the ground up.”

“The biggest challenge in the IT and printing product manufacturing is staying ahead of technological obsolescence. A product designed today may become redundant tomorrow due to rapid industry shifts. For instance, keyboard protectors were once designed for desktop keyboards, but as laptops evolved, so did market demands. Manufacturers must anticipate these shifts and develop adaptable solutions that cater to emerging trends. Future-ready products should focus on flexibility, sustainability, and evolving user needs. The key to long-term success is innovation — creating products that not only meet current market demands but also align with the ever-changing digital landscape.”

The Essence of the Discussion

This panel discussion highlighted the key challenges and future-ready solutions in India’s IT and printing industry. Experts emphasized the need for local component manufacturing, efficient distribution, and advanced service networks. The conversation also shed light on cloud-based printing, evolving consumer demands, and innovation-driven adaptability. Collaboration, technological foresight, and government support will be crucial in shaping a self-reliant and competitive industry.
