This is our third successful event. One purpose event has been to explore the opportunities for the global companies to invest, manufacture and trade in India independently or in collaboration with the Indian entrepreneurs, through panel discussion and networking. I want to particularly thank Ms. Cecile ZHENG, Deputy GM, C-RT Exhibition Services Ltd for giving us this great platform to conduct this event. We feel proud to have C-RT and RT Imaging World as our Media Partners. The aim of the panel discussion is to enlighten the audience how the fast growing and big Indian economy offers great opportunities to the global entrepreneurs to invest and manufacture imaging solutions in India in dependently or in collaboration with the Indian entrepreneurs. Collaborating with the local entrepreneurs gives an added advantage as it helps to exploit the readymade local channel network and partner ecosystem and place all in a Win-Win situation. I hope the valuable insights and suggestions that the panellists are going to give would be of great help to the audience.  I congratulate the winners of the awards in advance and wish these recognitions will drive them to achieve new milestones in the coming years to take the Imaging Industry to the new levels. MODERATOR: Mr. Swapan Roy, Founder & Editor-in-Chief, Imaging Solution India & Roy Mediative Group, India

As we know, India is one of the biggest and fastest growing markets in the world for technology products, including printers and consumables. India’s printer market is growing very fast and partners and consumers are interested to know the latest products and innovations. Government of India has launched the Make in India initiative to increase encourage domestic production and reduce imports. I request the panelists to share their insights on the latest technologies dominating the printing segment and opportunities for those who want to manufacture in India. Also, we have a large educated youth which will be a potential inexpensive resource for the foreign companies who want to invest in India.

India is definitely a huge and fastest growing market. HYB Toner focuses on providing top quality value for money imaging consumables which will to protect the reputation of the resellers and ensure high customer satisfaction. HYB also focuses on strictly adhering to the e-waste compliances. With government giving so many incentives, I am sure this is the best time for the foreign entrepreneurs to Make in India. Certifications such as BIS ensure that that only the top quality products will reach the end-users.

Integral, based in Germany, is one of the fastest growing global manufacturers and providers of toners. We want to expand our channel network and market share in India. We observe that in India print volumes are growing fast and color printing, though smaller compared to mono printing, is growing very fast. Since, toner manufacturing is more technology-intensive and less labor-intensive, right now, we do not find manufacturing in India will give us a great advantage. However, India, being a big market, offers a lot opportunity for our toners. It is priority market for us.

Though much smaller than that of China, the Indian manufacturing sector is evolving fast. I believe, Indian entrepreneurs need to invest more on R&D to rise to the levels of global providers in manufacturing. Then it will help us to reduce imports and export to other countries. Making in India will benefit both the foreign brands and also the local institutions. Another thing I appreciate is, the foreign companies while manufacturing India also collaborate with local academia which helps both.

Print volumes are increasing very fast in India. As more and more people from semi-urban and rural set to become part of the digitization process, printing is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. The trend of print services providers shifting from conventional (like offset) printing to digital (inkjet and laserjet) printing has already started and is expected to continue in the future. Digital printing helps to produce larger volumes faster, with better quality and lower costs. Inkjet usage in particular in particular is growing very fast in the consumer and SOHO segments. High-end and enterprise printing segment is also growing fast. I think Chinese companies with their advanced technology and experience in manufacturing can invest in India to set up plants which will benefit both the countries. Collaboration between the Indian entrepreneurs and foreign players speeds up the processes and ensure quicker launch of products, whereas the joint ventures can take advantage of the domestic players’ knowledge of the local market and supply chain. Initiatives such as anti-dumping duty are essentials to encourage domestic manufacturers because in the Indian manufacturing systems, the production is still not scaled and optimized to that of China.

ITDL has nearly 35% market share in India and we have two domestic manufacturing plants. We have been manufacturing in India for the past three decades. We see the domestic market for toners increasing year on year and we will continue to contribute our best to the market. We also export to several countries abroad. Make in India helps the Indian economy for domestic as well as foreign brands. For instance, with the anti-dumping duty being effective, many domestic players now want to manufacture in India. This helps us to reduce import dependence. At ITDL we use the latest German and Swiss machines and technology in our plants and are able to provide toners that have high quality and consistency. We also have high qualified and skilled professionals who know how to run and maintain these machines. We also invest enough on R&D and export our toners to several countries. To be successful Indian entrepreneurs should invest more on R&D.

Ninestar is the world’s largest aftermarket products manufacturer and provider. We market the products of G&G, the brand of Ninestar, in India through our national distributor, Supertron. G&G has the widest range of imaging consumables with very high quality and consistency. Coming to making in India, Indian government has launched a lot initiatives such as tax rebates, anti-dumping duty etc. For the Indian entrepreneurs to become successful as manufacturers to meet the domestic needs and also export to other countries, they should focus on quick adoption of new technologies to get early bird advantage and R&D.

Today, digitization is growing fast in India. The latest features such as mobile and cloud printing are also gradually catching up fast with the users.  The Indian government is doing its best to encourage domestic manufacturing through initiates such as tax rebates, manufacturing-friendly GST regime, training and skilling institutes close to domestic clusters, etc. The India government departments are also helping the entrepreneurs to automate their production systems and sourcing materials and components. To be successful, Indian entrepreneurs should focus for more on collaborating with Chinese companies and entrepreneurs than on competing with them, which will benefit both. India has the largest pool of young and technically trained educated people, which if we use effectively, I am sure we can become a manufacturing hub soon.

In conclusion

Indian manufacturing system has evolved a lot during last 10 years though it may take another decade or so to become a global manufacturing hub. If foreign brands could set up manufacturing units in India, independently or in collaboration with local players, it will benefit all. It is needless to say that India is a huge and fast growing market for printer consumables. This is the right time for players, both domestic and foreign, to start manufacturing in India.
