In a special interview featured in Imaging Solution magazine, Mr. Pramod Rajpal, CEO and Founder at ProDot, provided valuable insights into ProDot’s pioneering journey, commitment to ‘Make in India,’ market positioning, future plans, and technological advancements.
Kindly brief us about your journey.
In the early 1990s, after graduating in 1985, the inception of ProDot around 1990 marked the beginning of an era. This journey was driven by collaboration, passion, and your support.
What are your thoughts about Make in India?
Following the success of DNP, which prevented Chinese retaliation in India, ProDot played a pivotal role. The industry attests to this. The return of multinational brands can also be credited to ProDot. Our dream is to manufacture cartridges within India. To realize this vision, we’re launching a mega factory capable of producing cartridges, keyboards, and mice locally, solving all associated challenges. We now offer OEM and ODM services, a new endeavor for us, allowing customization and positioning ourselves as a comprehensive printing solutions provider.
How do you position yourself in the market?
Until now, ProDot has exclusively handled all manufacturing internally across our diverse product portfolio. We specialize in over 60 cartridge models and offer around 30 keyboard and mouse variants alongside accessories like spike busters, toner powder, and components. Our sales have been entirely under our brand, operating efficiently with our stock and dispatch teams ensuring timely deliveries from 15 locations across India. Serving 700 distributors, we effectively reach 10,000 dealers nationwide. This integrated approach underscores our commitment to quality and customer satisfaction.
What are your future plans?
Currently, our focus is on expanding our cartridge production capacity to meet growing demand. We aim to maximize our manufacturing capabilities in India, including a wider range of products such as cables and toner powder. This strategic planning underscores our commitment to domestic production and our goal to manufacture a comprehensive range of high-quality products within India’s borders.
Are you planning to manufacture all parts in India?
Currently, we are in the discussion and planning phase, exploring new product lines such as Cat6 and CCTV cables, including power cords, printer cables, and HDMI. Toner powder and cartridges remain key considerations, alongside our existing products like keyboards, mice, CCTV cameras, and monitors. Once our land acquisition is settled, we’ll finalize our expansion plans, aiming to establish three production units. This strategic approach reflects our commitment to diversifying our portfolio and advancing local manufacturing capabilities.
What new technologies have you developed to compete with China?
Before delving into our plans, I want to highlight a sentiment that resonates deeply within our industry. Often, leaders emerge not just from vision but from a sense of responsibility towards their nation’s progress. Consider the stories of the Taj Mahal Palace and Tata Steel—both born from aspirations to elevate India’s stature. Today, as Tata explores semiconductor manufacturing and Apple eyes production in India, I feel a similar responsibility towards indigenizing cartridge production. Our vision is anchored in establishing a mega factory encompassing three units across a 15-acre site. We’ve already secured 8 acres and await the final 7 acres, which we anticipate acquiring soon. Once complete, our timeline projects production commencement within a year and a half, accounting for construction and machinery installation.
This endeavor reflects a commitment beyond business—it’s about transforming our industry and affirming India’s self-reliance. We’ve pushed forward diligently despite delays, driven by the urgency to pioneer a vital aspect of local manufacturing. Like the pioneers before us, we aim to catalyze change and set new benchmarks in cartridge production. Through this venture, we aspire to redefine our role in the industry—not just as a manufacturer, but as a catalyst for innovation and national pride. By establishing these production units, we aim to contribute significantly to our nation’s economic growth and technological self-sufficiency.
Our journey embodies the spirit of entrepreneurial stewardship, echoing the ethos of those who shaped India’s industrial landscape. It’s about more than producing cartridges; it’s about forging a legacy of innovation, resilience, and commitment to our nation’s progress. This venture represents our firm belief in the power of local industry to drive meaningful change and propel India towards a brighter future.
What message would you like to give?
Through imaging solutions, I want to express our gratitude for the immense love and support from Indian consumers and channel partners. In the current global discourse around “Made in India,” it’s imperative to align with our nation’s aspirations and contribute to its growth and self-sufficiency.
