Microsoft’s Windows 11 24H2 update has been under scrutiny for compatibility issues with devices using the Scanner Communication Language (eSCL) protocol. While a December update aimed to resolve these problems, reports suggest that the fix hasn’t worked for everyone.
A Canon ImageClass MF269dw user highlighted the issue, stating their device functions properly on Windows 10 but encounters problems on Windows 11 unless both the computer and scanner are connected via wired Ethernet. The user also reported the problem to Canon, where a technician described the issue as “erratic,” noting that functionality seems to vary across different users and setups.
Microsoft first flagged issues with this protocol in November 2024, citing problems with device discovery. Specifically, USB-connected peripherals, including printers, scanners, and multifunction devices, failed to switch from eSCL to USB mode, preventing proper driver matching. At the time, Microsoft applied a compatibility hold, which was reportedly lifted following the December release of the KB5048667 update. By then, Microsoft claimed had resolved the issue.
Despite Microsoft’s announcement, Canon users are still facing challenges. According to Canon, the problem affects devices using its ScanGear MF driver. A Canon spokesperson confirmed to The Register that Canon is working closely with Microsoft on an operating system amendment, though a timeline for the fix remains unclear. Canon advises affected customers to use native Microsoft solutions, such as the legacy Windows Fax and Scan app, or switch to wired connections via USB.
The ongoing compatibility issues affect businesses and individual users who rely on multifunction printers and scanners. For those impacted, workarounds include reverting to Windows 10, maintaining wired Ethernet connections, or exploring alternative scanning software.
Microsoft has yet to provide further updates on this matter. However, customers eager for more details on Windows 11 updates and patches can refer to the developer log of the Windows 11 24H2.
