Canon U.S.A. Pioneers EPEAT Imaging Equipment Product Registration with Selected Digital MFPs

Canon U.S.A., Inc announced that it is among the first manufacturers with qualifying products in the new imaging equipment category of EPEAT, the global registry for greener electronics. Governments, businesses and individuals worldwide use EPEAT to assist them in choosing devices that can help reduce their environmental impact.

Additionally, all eight models in Canon’s imageRUNNER ADVANCE C5200 and imageRUNNER ADVANCE 4000 Series of multifunction devices have received an EPEAT Gold rating, the highest level of registration. “Canon’s commitment to Kyosei is more than a philosophy; it is ingrained in everything we do. “We are extremely proud to be among the first companies in the digital imaging category to secure EPEAT registration and look forward to expanding on our great heritage of developing products that can help our customers achieve their own environmental goals.” To be added to the EPEAT registry, an imaging device must meet at least 33 required environmental performance criteria. Products may achieve higher ratings by meeting some or all of 26 additional optional criteria. Gold qualification signifies that a product meets all required criteria and at least 75 percent of optional criteria. The rating criteria were developed during a four-year stakeholder consensus process that involved hundreds of representatives from the environmental, research, governmental and manufacturing sectors.

EPEAT rates products on a lifecycle basis, and considers, among other things, their absence of toxic substances, their use of recycled and recyclable materials, and their design for recycling, product longevity, energy efficiency, corporate performance and packaging. “Canon’s strategic decision to participate in this important expansion of the EPEAT registry shows the company’s dedication to environmental leadership,” said Robert Frisbee, EPEAT CEO. “We are pleased to welcome Canon as one of the first manufacturers in the imaging equipment category of the registry.”
